In every industry, business-critical processes depend on application performance. Interruption of real-time processing, customer service delays, and missed SLAs and deadlines are all plausible outcomes with all-too-real consequences. Fortunately, IBM i and third-party vendors offer significant power to prevent such disaster.

What's the biggest cause of performance problems on IBM i servers? Not even three of the major performance-tool vendors completely agree on the answers.

john gristWritten by John Ghrist

Despite its reputation for security and reliability, even the IBM i server platform isn't perfect. As workloads increase and the demand for 24x7 access grows, sooner or later every enterprise reaches a point where system performance seems to start declining. But when it comes to pinning down the reasons, there's no easy answer because there are so many potential causes.

Find out why network monitoring is so important for IBM i managers.

A professional athlete must consider several factors in order to deliver his best performance. The food he eats, the way he physically trains and mentally prepares, as well as his strategy and technique all play a part in deriving the best result. Imagine that athlete was completely prepared when he started the race of his life, having attended to all these things, only to have his performance ruined when he was struck by lightning. Unfortunate, some would say, but that's life.

Simple Steps for Performance Tuning Domino on IBM i PDF Print E-mail

With the absence of a notes.ini entry of MakeDominoGoFast=1, I'll show you how to tune Domino to get valuable performance increases with some simple solutions.

steve pitcherWritten by Steve Pitcher

Making Domino run lean and mean is similar to tuning other applications on IBM i. There are things you can do based on your environment to make Domino perform better on some systems that won't make much difference on others. There are also plenty of additional factors at the hardware and operating system level, such as the existing workload of the partition that Domino is hosted on, the amount of disk arms in use, and the communications infrastructure both on the system and attached to the system.

Application Runtime Expert (ARE) is an easy-to-use tool that can play a critical role in solving complex problems easier and faster.

gerard saverimuthuWritten by Gerard Surendran Saverimuthu

"It would have been nice to know the 'good' configuration status of the application and system-related parameters prior to the problem occurring." I'm sure this would be one of the many thoughts racing through your mind in the midst of troubleshooting an application problem. This information would not only save you a whole lot of time, but also contribute to bringing your application back online faster. And that's exactly the beauty of Application Runtime Expert (ARE).

Editor's note: This article introduces the white paper "How to Effectively Manage and Monitor Your Business Applications," available free from the MC White Paper Center.

Traditionally, businesses have targeted hardware, operating systems, and the user-base as the focus of their monitoring and management expenditure, but an increasing number of companies are now investing in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and High Availability (HA) applications to keep ahead of the competition. Organizations that follow this trend are making a large investment in their future, and complex implementations mean that you have to manage more, faster, and with less downtime so that ROI, and effectiveness in a highly competitive marketplace, is not compromised.
